Public Domain Websites

I’m sure a lot of you know about public domain and how it works. In a nutshell, these are items that anyone is free to use – images, video’s etc. I have some great links to sites that have public domain images, and you can use for them for anything. I will be posting them on this article.

There are other images you can use that have what is called  a “Creative Commons License” in the list of links I am going to give you, you will see references to this term and you should know what this means.

Creative Commons License

A Creative Commons (CC) license is one of the several public copyright licenses that enable the free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted work.

A CC license is common when an author wants to give people the right to share, use and build upon a work that they have created. CC provides an author flexibility (for example, they might choose to allow only non-commercial uses of their own work) and protects the people who use or redistribute an author's work, so they don’t have to worry about copyright infringement, as long as they abide by the conditions that are specified on the license by which the author distributes the work. Creative Commons Licenses are free of charge to the public. The details of each of these licenses depend on the version.

There are four basic types here are the icons and what they mean:

*derivative: Imitating or changing or creating something based on the original work.
*copyleft: A general method for marking a creative work as freely available to be modified, and requiring all modified and extended versions of the program to be free as well.

I have a list of over 140 websites that have public domain images. In this article I am going to be listing 10. If you would like to get the whole list email me (use the subject line Royalty Free) I will get them to you..

Blog Articles Re-purposed.

When I first started to blog it was a fairly new idea – I had heard it was good for business and they were all the rave. Little did I know what a blog can do for a business and it can do a lot.

Most of us know the virtues of having a blog. It positions you as an expert in your field, it brings in customers from around the globe, and it lets people know who you are and what you are about.

But a blog article is even more valuable than that because it can be used again for other purposes.

When you have a blog and write an article what do you do with it once you have posted it?

Don’t let those articles become history – re-purpose them they are valuable resources to your business.

7 Ways to Use a Blog Article
  1. Newsletters
    • Use your articles and put them in your newsletters to send out to your subscribers.
  2. Article Marketing
    • Great way to get exposure – and back links.
  3. Slide Share
  4. Pinterest
    • Pin pictures from you posts on Pinterest – add a descriptive line and don’t forget to link back to the article.
  5. List articles for a monthly review.
  6. Feature blogs on Social media
    • Feature highlights of your post and link back to the blog post.
  7. Pull the articles together and write an e-book.
    • Once you have enough articles you can organize them and write your first product…
Think outside the box – Be creative. Below I have links to illustrate how I have done some of these things…

Blog Article

Ezine Article

Slide Share Presentation

Pinterest

As you can see from the four examples, I have used one article and  they are re-used in different venues. If you have other ways you use your articles drop me a line I would love to hear from you until then have an amazing day.

Google+ Have You Joined Yet – Why Not?

When Google+ first started I was less than impressed with it – I signed up because of the nature of my job. I started putting people in my circles but then quickly lost interest. It was hard to see the value when Facebook was working so well.

Guess what – recently I have had a change of heart. I have joined a few Google+ groups private and
public and have gotten more out of these groups in the last few months then I ever would have imagined.

The information I have received is phenomenal. I have been able to connect with people who are like minded and share ideas.

In a course, I recently took with Kathleen Gage; I was reminded about the importance of raising your profile by letting people know you are an expert in your field and how to do it.– through articles, guest blog posts interviews, etc. Through Google+, I could  connect with people who have large followings, write guest articles with bylines, and write articles for an online magazine. It was just so easy people seem more open in the groups I have joined (not a lot of spam either). It all happens when you connect on a different level using Google+ -

I get notifications when people post in the groups. There is a ton of emails, but that is where writing a good title comes in. I read the titles get rid of those that don’t interest me and read the rest.

If you have not gotten into Google+ yet, and you are a business you really need to. There are more opportunities for network marketing than anywhere else (in my experience).

I have also learned about effective tools to help with productivity in my business. The essence of the group is genuine they help each other out with what is working for them and what is not. I do wish that Google+ allowed vanity names and a few other things.

My next s project will be learning how to use Google Hangout – watch for an upcoming article!

So my friends – do go and cultivate your Google+ groups and see how valuable it can be. I believe you will get hooked just like I am…

Personal Development How Important Is It?

That seems like an obvious question right. It may seem like a no brainer, but so many people do not take time for themselves; life is so busy with work, families and especially when you own your own business or trying to start one, it seems next to impossible to find the time.

Personal development helps you in prioritizing the important things in life. It gives you balance and peace of mind; it helps to clear the clutter of negative thinking and self-doubt. I know this is a business blog, but I feel this is important enough to write an article about.

It is so important to take the time because it will lead to a more balanced and harmonious life and that leads to a successful and fulfilling existence.

What is personal development? It is the act of enriching one’s own physical, emotional and psychological well-being. It is me time – and everyone around you will be enriched because you will be your best self.

One of the best ways to get rid of road block that clutter your mind or hold you back from achieving your full potential are combining Affirmations, Meditation and Self-hypnosis audio. Using all three is a powerful combination. One that will reach into your subconscious, reprogram your thoughts turning around the negative and creating positive thoughts. This in turn improves every area of your life – business – personal – social…

So many people try affirmations and when they don’t get the results they think they should have given up and abandon the idea.
They do work when done properly

How to Create Powerful Affirmations:

  • Take stock of yourself by making an inventory of your best qualities, abilities, or other attributes. Are you a hard worker, organized, beautiful? Make note of it. Write each quality down in a short sentence, starting with "I" and using the present tense: "I am beautiful," for example, or "I am generous." These statements are affirmations of who you are. We seem to always dwell on all the negative things we don’t like about ourselves. A list of your positive attributes will help you break the cycle.
  • Take a day or two and write down all the negative scripts you tell yourself. For example “I am so fat," I have no willpower,” “I will never be successful” etc. We will turn these harmful thought around using affirmations. Affirmations are excellent at counteracting negative perceptions you have about yourself.
  • You may find you have a lot of different areas to work on. It is more effective to concentrate on just a few affirmations at a time. Choose the most important negative scripts you need to change. Once you start seeing improvement in those area’s you will go to the next.
  • Now is the time to turn your negative self-talk into positive affirmations. This will help you re-script your sub-conscious mind. Just like you wrote your best qualities at the beginning of this exercise you will now turn your negatives into positives. There are rules when writing your affirmations. You must remember when you write an affirmation they are in the present tense and occur in the now.
  • Affirmations must be positive not negative. A negative affirmation is one that states your opposition to it. Example: “I am not my father," “I do not think bad thoughts," “I do not eat when I am not hungry," “I will not gain weight." They allow the mind to hear negative connotations that will override the positive you are trying to achieve. So instead of using the examples above you would write: “I fill my mind with positive thoughts every day”, “I chose to eat food that is nourishing” IE: “I am not," I do not create” “I do not think," are negative starts to any affirmation.

There are two types of affirmations.

The Intention that you wish to create, it would look like this: “I have perfect health," “I make people happy," “I am perfectly calm,"" I am smart and successful."

A decision or conclusion “I do the best I can," “People are basically good," “I have everything I need to be extremely successful."

Make your affirmations visible so you can use them over, and over, and over. Repetition is the key to making affirmations effective. You will need to repeat them to yourself several times a day or more. How?Write your affirmations in a journal every morning when you wake up and when you go to bed each night. They should be the first thing you think of when you get up and the last thing your think when you go to bed.

Meditate on your affirmations. Get comfortable close your eyes and repeat your affirmations, visualize how you will feel, what it will look like – feel the emotion behind the affirmation.

Leave sticky notes around the house where you will see them. Stick them everywhere (one affirmation per paper). What the mind hears repeatedly it tends to repeat, and then it attempts to bring that into reality. What you say yourself carries the greatest weight in self-evaluation and self-creation.

The more you affirm something the more firmly your mind will accept it. Using affirmations in combination with a goal can be very powerful.

Affirmations are part of the Law of Attraction used hand in hand you will be shocked at what happens..

Attention Business Owners: Number One Mistake When Setting Up Your Facebook Account

A big mistake a lot of businesses make from the beginning (me included) is building a personal page and using it as a business page.  When setting up Facebook you will have to create your personal page first – then you created your business page.

When I first accessed Facebook, I set up my personal page and then realized as time went on it wasn't the greatest of decisions. Since studying and taking classes on how to profit using Facebook – it was as plain as the nose on my face – each and every resource I have accessed to learn about Facebook says, “build a business page do not use a personal page for business."

The reasons are numerous:

Why you don’t want to use personal pages for your business:
  • Allows only 5000 followers
  • Accessed by family and friends it is hard to maintain a professional appearance.
  • When Aunt Sue starts ranting and raving about her political views it could turn some potential clients off. You get the point.
  • Using a personal page for business is against Facebook’s “Terms of Use” and can be shut down by Facebook.
Why You Should Use a Fan Page/Business Page:
  • It allows you to brand your business through use of your logo and customized cover photo.
  • You can create unique tabs or landing pages that are extremely valuable when used properly.
  • Business pages are indexed by Google. Anything you post on your page can be found by people doing Google searches.
  • As an added bonus when you link from your business page to your website you are increasing the chances of achieving a higher ranking within Google.
Make sure when setting up your business page – you name it with Keywords that people are looking for. You can use your business name – especially if you have a lot of people who know your business. This is a decision you will have to make. I chose Artista Design from the get-go but I think I should have done keywords now it is impossible to change my business page name.

Think about it carefully before setting your page up. For more tips, tricks and exclusive links that will benefit your business, like my page on Facebook.

Why You Need to Use Facebook for Business…

There are two schools of thought when businesses think about using Facebook – one is “I will just build a page, and they will come!” no, not really that is only ½ of the equation. These businesses start off earnestly with great excitement but soon become frustrated because they are not getting the returns they want or need.
Then there are business owners who think Facebook is a waste of time and resources.  They think they have to spend hours just to stay ahead of the fray, and it is just not worth it.

Both groups are wrong – Facebook is an important business tool and when you learn the tips, tricks and techniques, there is nothing quite like it.

Did you know Facebook is still growing after years of existence? 37% growth in 2011, 1 in six people (on the planet) are using Facebook; that is over 800 million people. If your target market’s age is 35+ that demographic is growing rapidly, this age group is now over 30% of the entire Facebook user base (as of 2011).

Harnessing the power of Facebook is learned through knowledge. It is important to become aware of the best techniques through reading and taking classes. Start with asking yourself what you want to achieve having your business on Facebook?

What are your goals for your business, gaining exposure, building your brand, selling products or services? How about all the above…

I am constantly amazed at how much really valuable information is available through searches on the web. Why not start educating yourself on how to use Facebook the right way?

Without a doubt, you need to be on Facebook. I don’t care what market you are in it doesn't matter your market is on Facebook.

Researching Keywords – How to do it Right.

Everyone who has a website knows (or should know) how important keywords are.  Search engines use keywords when they include your website in their search results. Keywords can make or break your search engine ranking. When searching for Keyword it is important to remember, it’s not always about getting visitors to your site, but about getting the right kind of visitors.

Often overlooked is the long-tailed keyword. Did you know 70% of searches are done with long-tailed
keywords? Long-tailed keywords often convert better, because they catch people later in the buying/conversion cycle.

(Long-tailed Keywords) Keyword phrases with at least 2 or three words in them.

Think about how you search – do you put one word in or a string of words. I personally put in 3 or 4 to get what I want. And usually it is in a sentence such as: Free guided meditation audio or How to plant petunia’s you get what I mean.

Another mistake a lot of people make is putting in keywords that are the most popular and most competitive. This makes it virtually impossible to come up on the first page of a search engine. What you want to look for are those keywords and phrases that have a lot of people searching but not so many businesses using them.

When using a keyword research tool you will find that there are different columns of information. Usually you will put in a keyword or phrase and hit search you will see a lot of different versions of the keywords below and alongside of them will be a column with something like Search Volume (this is the number of people search using that keyword or phrase) and Competition (these are the number of websites that are using the same keywords). You will want to pick the keywords that have a lot of volume but less competition. This is why keyword research tools are invaluable…

Below are 4 Free Keyword Research websites.
  1. Keyword Country
  2. Google AdWords
  3. Key Word Discovery (free trial)
  4. Moz (You will have to register to get the tools)
Don’t forget if you are local to put the location/City/State in your keywords – it will make a big difference.

Setting up a New Business – How to Succeed

I am currently working with a client who I know is going to be successful. They have the passion and excitement but more than that, they have done the home work that should be involved with building a strong foundation for their business.

Have you really set up a sound foundation for your business?

It is so much easier to build a business right the first time than to try and save a company that is floundering. The mistakes I see individuals make when starting an online business would surprise you. An amazing amount of people really do not take the time to research competitors, find out who their target market is or even
Strategic Planning
figure out what they will need in order to market their business/services once they have website is developed.
In our society, we (me included) want it all right now. We don't want to have to wait… We want instantaneous wealth, success, fame that is why it is so easy for those unethical few to bilk people/businesses out of billions of dollars a year…

What have I learned being in business for over a decade? There are no short cuts…

To be successful in any endeavor you must first do what it takes to build a strong foundation, this includes:
  • Researching
  • Learning about your competition
  • Who is your target market?
  • Putting together a business plan
  • Figuring out and setting aside a marketing budget
  • Figuring out your Unique Selling Proposition (USP)
  • Learning that you don't cut corners on the important stuff.
    • Online image creation. It is no longer an option to have a website and work with social media. If you are going to build a business you need to develop these crucial pieces.
    • Develop a traditional marketing package – including business cards, branding you look with logo, tagline and contact information including website, Facebook etc. Other things such as flyers, online brochures etc. depending on your business.
    • Develop a following – a data-base of people who are interested in your product or service.

Put together a blueprint for your success – it takes time to be able to hammer these things out. It is so crucial it literally can make a different on whether your company will live or die.
Did you know that 99% of these overnight success stories are simply not.

These “lucky few” have been dreaming, planning, and structuring this “overnight success” for some time in some cases for years…

Don't be fooled – Success is not an accident, and it is not a fluke…

When you plan well and build a strong foundation. Success is up to you.

Do You Care About Your Customers?

After talking to a prospective client the other day – a thought came into my head that I hadn't even though of in years.

“People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care.”

This is the bare bones truth… As a young person one of my first jobs was in sales. I was quite shy and really hated the hard sale or the pushy image sales people could give off.
Sales have had a bad reputation – there is still a misconception that sales people are insincere and manipulative (anything for a sale). Don't get me wrong these people are out there, and they give everyone a bad name.

I am a strong believer in what goes around comes around, this type of person seldom becomes a super star, they quickly fade – and dye out, or go out with a bang/bad reputation and what have they got left??

Being ethical and honest in your business is the only way to truly love what you do - (and we are all in sales don't kid yourselves).
The 3 secrets to having a successful business, as well as being an amazing sells/marketing person are:

  • Believe in your product/service.
  • Believe in yourself
  • Believe in what YOU CAN DO FOR OTHERS…

If you cannot say yes to all three of these things then you must find a different career path, or a different product to sell/promote because I promise you will never be successful... Never

And always remember this simple truth..

“People don't care how much you know, until they know how much you care!”

Basic Rules to Live By - Online Business

I was going through some of my older articles and I found a few that are timeless and are worth repeating. Enjoy...

Being a designer I know the value of a good looking – and eye catching web site.

However, unlike some designers I also know the value of good content it is extremely important.

It is like first impressions – when you see someone you judge them within less than 3 minutes of meeting them. Whether you want to admit it or not – it is the truth, it is human nature.

Then if you decide to stick around and get to know this person your impression can change radically – you may find your judgment was right spot on, and you are impressed with them inside and out –or- you may find they are not what you though and they are superficial without any depth.

The same is true for your website.

The first page of your website should capture your visitor’s attention – highlight the positive aspects of your service or product. Capture the essence of what it is you are trying to convey.

Your home page should not be long winded with all the details you can find. It will bore or even turn off potential clients who will feel they do not have time to read it or just feel overwhelmed.

We all lead busy lives and don’t have time to read a novel on the first entrance to a website.

Once your visitor reads what you can do for them – the essence or spark of your service or product you want them to think “wow that is just what I need! Or I really want to know more!

At this point, they will go deeper into your website. They are hooked - That is where you can take the time to explain the benefits they will receive – and what your product/service is all about.

So many times I have a client who wants to put everything but the kitchen sink on the first page

– resist this temptation -.

The truth is the simpler and more descriptive the first page the better – always focus on your visitor - what it will do for the customer or how it will solve client problems…

It makes you visitors want to go further and investigate what you have to offer. However, if your content is too long winded – watered down or just grammatically incorrect, I will guarantee they will not stay on your website to see what you have to offer.

Once someone likes what they see (and read) – they will go further and want to know more details…

So think about it – do you need to refurbish you website – simplify the copy on your home page and make it more appealing to visitors ??

For more tips and tricks on how to have a more profitable website – sign up to receive articles by email (see side bar above).

What’s New in 2013 (Google) SEO Updates…

I have not heard or seen any significant changes in this year’s  Google algorithms . Unlike last year where we saw significant changes that dropped  a lot of websites PageRank. They were just banished from the front pages.

Let's recap what did happen last year and how those updates in 2012 really shook up some websites that had enjoyed a prominent  spot on Google’s search engine for so long.

Even though Google’s Panda algorithm was originally released in 2011, it went through numerous updates in 2012 kicking many low quality websites out of their dominant positions on Google; tens of thousands of websites were affected. It also took aim at duplicate content and content that seemed to be stolen from other websites/blogs.

What is the Panda Algorithm:  Panda aimed to lower the rank of “low-quality” websites and return higher-quality sites near the top of the search results. Google Panda was built through an algorithm update that used artificial intelligence. Human quality testers rated thousands of websites based on measures of quality, including design, trustworthiness, speed and whether or not they would return to the website. For more on this topic  click here.

I also found a useful article Google Panda Update Survival guide.

Google released its Penguin Algorithm in 2012. Many more companies that engaged in unfriendly Penguin SEO tactics were dropped from the search entirely and companies that continued to break the rules saw their ranking disappear, often without warning.

What is the Penguin Algorithm;  This updates purpose was to catch sites deemed to be spamming its search results, by buying links or obtaining links through networks designed primarily to boost Google Rankings. This does not include legitimate quality links. It also penalizes websites that have too many ads above the fold.

For more information on Google Penguin  click here.

So as you can see “Value” is  an important factor – one that will dictate how Google perceives websites.

Looking Forward to 2013

This year the most significant factor for 2013 is creating value for the reader. Google has been very explicit this year about good-quality content. What does that mean?
  • Great Information and Resource Richness
  • Unique Content and Topics
Google’s  AuthorRank is a new system Google uses to cut down the spam content that litters the Internet.  This system determines the quality content based on the credibility of its author.  AuthorRank is not a replacement for PageRank. It is a separate system that instructs Google PageRank to weigh content more appropriately. To learn more about AuthorRank and how to build your online reputation, I have found a wonderful article click here.

Content marketing is the next big thing that is being talked about. Content marketing attracts back links, and adds value for the reader. Because you have to generate higher-quality  content, circulate it, and make sure your content get published widely through social media, article marketing, etc. this will generate substantial SEO value.

Social Media now plays a big factor in getting valid ranking. As the year goes on and probably for years to come – shares, mentions, re-tweets and most importantly  +1s are trophies all online business needs to cultivate.

Media in general;  video and images are becoming very important on the Internet.  Websites such as Youtube and Pinterest have really given an important element to getting noticed. It is becoming essential to add relevant non-textual media to text content, this adds value and brings visitors to your websites.

Local website information,  has really pumped up my rankings. Applying local SEO enjoys higher rankings and visibility. I have seen it myself when I started using Local Keywords, maps, and reviews on local information sites.

Hopefully, this will help you navigate through 2013 as well as give you a  good refresher  course on what to do to promote your website.  I have also updated my SEO checklist  you can download it for free Click Here.

How To Reach Your Goals

The New Year brings about thoughts of change – making resolutions and challenging ourselves to reach for things that we feel will make a real difference in our lives.

But more often than not, no matter how determined we are life gets in the way. Our resolutions are put on the back shelve, and we are in the same position month after month, year after year.

You have all heard the saying “keep doing what you’re doing and keep getting what you are getting”. This is such a true statement – how many people do you know who are stuck in the same rut – unhappy – spinning their wheels and still doing the same thing over and over.

It is not easy to reach your goals – if it were everyone would be successful. It takes determination, a specific plan, and doing what it takes everyday. If you want a change you are going to need to change.

The little things in life make the biggest difference – if you manage your day you can change your life.
You need to set specific goals – the more specific the better. Goal setting is a powerful process when done right. By knowing precisely what you want to achieve and breaking it down into bit size chunks your ideal future will become a reality.

I am a firm believer that nothing is impossible – if you change your thoughts, beliefs and how you talk to yourself, you will be amazed at how different life will become. When you truly believe you can achieve that goal and take these specific steps – you will achieve what you really want in this life.

Goal setting made easy…

First you need to look at the big picture – what is truly important in your life – where do you see yourself in 5 years. By really thinking about this and writing it down on paper you will be able to create a plan that will take you where you want to go.

Be very specific the more detail the better.

Then you need to break it down – into smaller and smaller targets. Create a one year plan, six month plan, and one month plan of progressively smaller goals.

What are the things you can do today and tomorrow that will lead you in that direction?

What actions do you need to take to make this a reality? Each of these steps should be based on the previous plan.

When you have broken it down – you need to make a daily “To Do List” of things you will do to make your vision a reality.

You may be saying to yourself – whew to much work for me or when will I have the time? This is your life and you can make anything happen unless you make excuses. You have the time if you will make it a priority.

Envision your goals, see yourself where you want to be – what will your life be like – how will you feel.

It is not easy – but it is simple when you follow your master plan. Don’t let your head get in the way – negative thoughts are your worst enemy. Don’t share you goals with people who will not support you in your dream. When you share your vision with people who are negative or don’t believe it can be done, you are opening yourself up for self defeating thoughts.

Write down what you say to yourself – and change the negative into a positive.

Everyone will have times when they run into obstacles, it is what you do with them that counts. This is the time when tenacity and belief in yourself will make a difference.
