Rules for Using Hashtags on YouTube

As social media adopts  hashtags it's important to know the rules because the rules are not the same on each site.

Each social media site has different rules and quirks.

For example in Pinterest hashtags really seem to matter the most in the pin descriptions. You will also get different results when you use multiple words in your hashtag and capitalize each word. This is not the case in Twitter and others.

With that said today I am posting a video on "How to Use Hashtags on YouTube"

Lets Talk About Hashtags #101

If you are new to the social media world, you may wonder what a hashtag is and why do people use them? If you have been around for a while, you will want to know the best way to use them. Twitter is the one that started out using the hash tag exclusively now Facebook, Pinterest, and even Google+ has followed this trend.

A hashtag is a pound sign # followed with meta-data or keywords that turn into a link once posted Example:
#maroon5
The hash tag you use then puts your post into that category so people that are interested in Maroon 5 will see your post, and you can follow posts about this subject.

It is a great way to connect with people who have the same interests as you, like-minded people.

If you are a business, then it is even more important to know the power of a hashtag. Use them on all social media when you post. This little hash tag can literally give you exposure to millions of people.

The hashtag needs to be general enough that people are posting with it but specific enough you are not lost in a sea of information that really has nothing to do with what you are looking for.

If you have notice sometimes unique hashtags are up so everyone can see what is going on with that certain subject or business. If you have notice television stations are using original hash tags to get you to tweet your opinion – or even vote (Dancing with the Stars, The Voice) to name a few.

Three Rules You Need to Know before using Hashtags:

1. No spaces between your words. Even if your hashtags have multiple words you spell them as one.
2. A #hashtag is not case sensitive so if you use #Maroon5 or #maroon5 you will go to the same place.
3. Numbers are supported so you can add any amount of numbers that make sense.

Put #tags on all your posts no matter what platform you are using – it will really help to boost your visibility. This is especially important for businesses who are trying to market through social media.

Why Do People Use Pinterest.

Pinterest is always analyzing the people who use their website and what they are searching for. They have found that Peoples interest generally fall into five categories:

What Drives People to Pinterest
  1. A passion they have – Photography, Art, Traveling
  2. Training/learning – Expanding their knowledge, keep skills updated, seeing what is going on in their industry
  3. Hobbies they do for fun – Crafts, Art Projects, Running …A short term project – Redecorating a room, planning a Wedding,
  4. Putting together a party. Interests that could change as time goes on – like colors, fashion

Now that you have this information at your fingertips how do you use it? It all comes down to knowing who your target market is. I know you probably have heard that phrase everyday  day of your life – there
is a reason for that it because it is true!

What types of passions would people who do business with you have, do they have certain interests that set them apart from the general population?  Research your audience you will find your eyes will be opened to ideas on how to get them to follow you on Pinterest.

After you have done your due diligence think about what content your business already has that you could add to Pinterest so people who need your services or products will search out your boards.

People love humor so don’t be afraid to throw a little of that in. And beautiful or intriguing picture the pin that I have had literally go viral was of a dog sitting in a robe no kidding!

Go to my Pinterest page and check it out. Click on the board Giggles – Joy and you will see the dog sitting there with a robe and a cup of coffee it has had so far 36 likes and 150 shares. Every day I have one more share! Get off the stick have some fun and get into the Pinterest Craze…
