Lets Talk About Hashtags #101

If you are new to the social media world, you may wonder what a hashtag is and why do people use them? If you have been around for a while, you will want to know the best way to use them. Twitter is the one that started out using the hash tag exclusively now Facebook, Pinterest, and even Google+ has followed this trend.

A hashtag is a pound sign # followed with meta-data or keywords that turn into a link once posted Example:
#maroon5
The hash tag you use then puts your post into that category so people that are interested in Maroon 5 will see your post, and you can follow posts about this subject.

It is a great way to connect with people who have the same interests as you, like-minded people.

If you are a business, then it is even more important to know the power of a hashtag. Use them on all social media when you post. This little hash tag can literally give you exposure to millions of people.

The hashtag needs to be general enough that people are posting with it but specific enough you are not lost in a sea of information that really has nothing to do with what you are looking for.

If you have notice sometimes unique hashtags are up so everyone can see what is going on with that certain subject or business. If you have notice television stations are using original hash tags to get you to tweet your opinion – or even vote (Dancing with the Stars, The Voice) to name a few.

Three Rules You Need to Know before using Hashtags:

1. No spaces between your words. Even if your hashtags have multiple words you spell them as one.
2. A #hashtag is not case sensitive so if you use #Maroon5 or #maroon5 you will go to the same place.
3. Numbers are supported so you can add any amount of numbers that make sense.

Put #tags on all your posts no matter what platform you are using – it will really help to boost your visibility. This is especially important for businesses who are trying to market through social media.
